Originally from Bayonne, New Jersey, Crystal discovered a passion for storytelling early on in life. She pursued her academic journey at Hofstra University, where she graduated in May 2023 with a Bachelor's degree in Journalism and a minor in Political Science. Her education provided a strong foundation in media and politics, enabling her to explore and report on diverse issues. Crystal is now eager to continue strengthening more of her skills and contribute to the communities she closely represents.
My Story
Raised by an immigrant parent in her local projects, Crystal quickly became aware of her surroundings and the challenges faced by immigrant families and the experiences of those in low-income communities, especially through their mother's journey towards citizenship and living in the United States. This early exposure sparked her interest in immigration issues and reform and diving deeper into local and national politics shaping our every day lives.
Growing up in a bilingual household, Bermudez faced many hurdles, navigating between English and Spanish, and digesting media and current events in both languages. This dual linguistic and cultural upbringing not only broadened her worldview but also instilled a deep appreciation for the power of diverse perspectives in storytelling.
It wasn’t until 2021 that she had the opportunity to intern with ABC News for their evening segment Nightline, where she immersed herself in the newsroom covering different topics. She credits much of her experience and the mentorship she received that has helped lead her career.
Bermudez is driven to continue to impact the communities she brings coverage to, all while embracing the importance of sharing authentic narratives that reflect the richness and diversity of Latino communities, amplifying voices that are often underrepresented or misrepresented in mainstream media.
